Course Essence Statement
To Equip the learner with knowledge, skills and appropriate attitude for implementing Community Health Nursing and primary Health Care Services to individuals, families and the community
Course Objectives
- Analyze the concepts and principles of Community Health Nursing and its historical development in Kenya.
- Describe the conceptual models in community health Nursing: Health belief Model, PRECEDE model, Donabedian Model, Newman’s Model, Rogers Model, Imogene King Model
- Examine the Principles of primary Health care in nursing practice.
- Identify the role of community health nurse in child health and childhood immunizations
- Explore the different methods of contraception used in family planning
- Explain epidemiological principles and concepts related to communicable disease prevention, surveillance, notification and disease control in the community.
Course expected learning outcomes
- Demonstrate the concepts and principles of Community Health Nursing and its historical development in Kenya.
- Apply the conceptual models in community health Nursing: Health belief Model, PRECEDE PROCEDE model, Donabedian Model, Betty Newman’s Model, Rogers Model, Imogene King Model
- Apply the Principles of primary Health care in nursing practice.
- Participate in nutritional assessment of children and childhood immunizations
- Discuss family planning services
- Apply epidemiological principles and concepts related to communicable disease prevention, surveillance, notification and disease control in the community.
Course Content
Definition and historical development: community health nursing; national and international development of community health nursing. Community health nursing: the element of community health practice, philosophy, nature and scope. History development of community health nursing; global, regional, local, trends in community health nursing; public health and public health nursing, roles of community health nurse, roles of public health nurse.
